FIRST CIRCULAR / PREMIÈRE CIRCULAIRE
Talking about mammoths and mastodons that were living in forest or steppe areas of Prehistory is also talking about their present -day relatives from Asia and Africa. This is a focus on the evolution of the species and on the consequences of the climatic changes.
Three millions years ago, the scattered forests which constitute the landscapes of the Haute-Loire (France) territory, are populated of big mammals, extinct since a long time. Deer, rhinoceroses, tapirs and hyenas are occurring, but also two mastodons: Mammut borsoni and Anancus arvernensis, two typical animals of this faunal complex of this time slice and of this area. Later, between 2,5 millions years and 15 000 years, successively occurs the southern mammoth, the steppe mammoth and the woolly mammoth, underlining the successive climatic deteriorations that characterize these periods. The first fossils of these Proboscidea have been found, around 1840 by few local scholars and among them, Auguste Aymard (1808-1889) one of the first French paleontologist, together with Cuvier. He’s the main donor of the very important collection kept today to the musée Crozatier in the Puy-in-Velay, of which he was the curator.
Following previous meetings in St Petersburg in Russia, Rotterdam in The Netherlands, in the Yukon region in Canada and Yakutsk in Siberia, the Vth International Conference on Mammoths and their Relatives (The World of Mammoths: Vth International Conference on Mammoths and their Relatives – Mammoths and their Relatives from the Pliocene to Present-Day: Biotopes, Evolution and Human Impact) will be held in Le Puy-en-Velay from the 30th August to the 4th September 2010. The conference will unite for the first time the two international conferences which were dealing with related topics: International Mammoths Conference and The World of Elephant Congress. A link between the work of paleontologists on the fossil record and that of biologists and ethologists on living elephants will be achieved.
Evoquer aujourd’hui les mammouths et les mastodontes qui peuplaient les forêts et les steppes de la préhistoire, c’est aussi parler de leurs descendants actuels, éléphants d’Asie et d’Afrique. C’est surtout se pencher sur l’évolution des espèces et des changements climatiques afin d’apporter des éléments de réponses sur les grandes questions planétaires qui se posent à nos sociétés du début du 21ème siècle.
Il y a trois millions d’années, les forêts clairsemées qui constituent le plus clair des paysages de l’actuelle Haute-Loire (France), sont peuplées de grands mammifères depuis longtemps disparus. On y trouve des cervidés, des rhinocéros, des équidés, des hyènes mais également des mastodontes dénommés Mammut borsoni et Anancus arvernensis, deux animaux symptomatiques des faunes de ces périodes et de cette région. Plus tard, entre 2,5 millions d’années et 15 000 ans on retrouve successivement : l’éléphant méridional, le mammouth des steppes et le mammouth laineux, soulignant les dégradations climatiques successives qui caractérisent ces périodes.
Les premiers fossiles de ces proboscidiens ont été trouvés, à partir de 1840 par une poignée d’érudits à l’exemple d’Auguste Aymard (1808-1889) un des fondateurs de la paléontologie en France, dans la suite de Cuvier. Il est le principal donateur de la très importante collection conservée aujourd’hui au musée Crozatier du Puy-en-Velay.
Après Saint-Pétersbourg en Russie, Rotterdam aux Pays-Bas, dans le Yukon au Canada et Yakutsk en Sibérie, la 5ème conférence internationale sur les mammouths et leur famille se tiendra au Puy-en-Velay du 30 août au 4 septembre 2010. Cette conférence réunira pour la première fois les deux conférences internationales qui se tenaient auparavant en parallèle sur ce sujet : International Mammoths Conference et World of Elephant et fera donc le lien entre le travail des paléontologues sur les fossiles et des biologistes sur les éléphants actuels.

CONFERENCE STRUCTURE / STRUCTURE DE LA CONFERENCE
The Congress will be held in Le Puy-en-Velay, Haute-Loire, France, from August the 30th to September the 4th 2010. It will be hosted by the Département de Haute-Loire (opening ceremony and working sessions) and the city of Le Puy-en-Velay (closing ceremony).
La conférence se tiendra au Puy-en-Velay, Haute-Loire, France du 30 Août au 4 septembre 2010. La cérémonie d’ouverture et les sessions de travail se dérouleront à l’Hôtel du Département, la cérémonie de clôture sera organisée au théâtre de la ville du Puy-en-Velay.

The conference fees are fixed at 300€ (student: 150€).

ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONS / INFORMATIONS SUPPLÉMENTAIRES
Duration of the talks: 20 mn (15mn presentation + 5 mn questions).
No poster sessions. The poster will be available the entire duration of the conference in the main room. The authors of posters will have the possibility to publish the abstract in the abstract volume and to publish online their poster on the website of the conference which is going to open in April 2008.
There will not be parallel session.
La durée des présentations orales est fixée à 20mn (15 mn de présentation et 5 mn de question)
Il n’y a pas de session pour les posters. Les posters seront disponibles durant la durée totale de la conférence dans la pièce principale. Les auteurs des posters auront la possibilité de publier un résumé dans le volume des résumés de la conférence ainsi que de déposer leur posters online sur le site internet de la conférence qui sera ouvert dès Avril 2008.
